Why Do I Do Art?

Ever since I was young, the act of doing art has always resonated with me more than anything else. But why? What is the reason behind my desire to do art? What about art keeps bringing me back?

I used to have a teacher for a short time named J. Kirk Richards who put together a brilliant survey to understanding his student's motivations to pursue art. I took this survey and found it very helpful to understanding my goals. So, I am going to share with you all what the results were!

Reason #5: Accomplishment/Financial

I feel a sense of accomplishment from being able to help my family financially. I haven't ever really been paid well for my art before so it would be nice to be recognized financially for what I make.

Reason #4: Discipline/Growth

I love to dedicate time to improving on my art. I like to see the gradual progress on areas where I thought were too difficult to attempt. It is rewarding to me to work on my craft.

Reason #3: Connection

I love the energy in the art community. It is so fun to get together with other artists and bond over our work. I especially love the push and pull of affirming and critical feedback between artists.

Reason #2: Style

To have an original and recognizable style is important to me. I want to have an art style that is uniquely mine and that I am happy with.

Reason #1: Beauty

Ultimately, in the end I want to make something that is truly beautiful. Something that is rich and interesting. I hope some day that I make something that can be held up as perfect.

So, this survey taught me a few things that I should focus on. I should focus on growing, making connections, and developing a style into something beautiful. How I go about that still alludes me, but still, this is something I am going to be thinking about as I move forward with my DIY "art school".
